History

Chief Town of a bailiwick at the Revolution of 1789. In 1492, mines and a foundry were run there.

Sightseeing

Neolithic finds. A Merovingian churchyard with weapons and jewels.
The old fortifications of the 13th and 14th centuries remain another 4 towers and the outer wall.
The tower called " Staedtelgloeckelturm " or " tower of the bell of the village " was transformed into a belfry in 14th century.
Rosenbourg's castle, on a low hill, was transformed into a habitable dungeon.
Half-timbered or stone houses of the 16th to the 18th centuries, some of them with box windows, sculptures, at numbers 107 and 127 of Byrris street.
In the same street the portals at numbers 140 and 142, and 3 and 5 of Klingeltor street.
The registrations embedded in facade of the number 1 of the same street.
The City Hall dates from 1752.
The former house of the bailiff goes back up to the 18th century.
The " Staedtel- " and " Kalks- " fountains.
The Lutheran Saint Martin's church, with its church - hall of the 13th to the 14th centuries, seriously reshaped in 19th century with a polygonal choir, an arched hall and a bell tower of Neo-gothic style, an outer wall and transept crossing with mono-cylindrical piles of the 13th and 14th centuries, stained glass windows of the 14th century, organ case of 1768.
The Roman Catholic church of the 19th century is a partial reproduction of the Protestant church.
The chapel Saint Erard with vestiges of the choir and the nave dating of the 12th century, partially modified at the level of the windows of Gothic style.
Synagogue of the 19th century, Jewish cemeteries and oratory.

Miscellaneous Informations

Altitude 200 m. 1597 inhabitants.
Located on the banks of the river Westerbach, at the edge of the vast forest of Westhoffen (940 hectares). Viewpoints in the forest, notably from the top of the hill of " Geierstein ".
Paths marked out by the Club Vosgien.
Quarries, cement works, sawmills.
Vineyard: Route des Vins d'Alsace.
Orchards, (particularly cherry trees), mixed farming, meadows, beekeeping.
Cherries discovery path with 5 subjects : citylife, grape related, trees related, conservatory cherry and forest trees orchard . Length 8,5 kilometers with about 20 explanation signs.
Market on Fridays.
Fair in November.
Popular feast or " Messti " the 1st or on the 2nd Sunday of November.
Hunting, fishing.
Numerous socio-cultural and sports associations.
Campsite at the farm, rural lodgings.
