Grand Cru : [ Bruderthal ]

History

In 1308, the emperor and the bishop of Strasbourg swapped Molsheim for Mulhouse.
Philippe of Souabe destroyed the city in 12th century.
The city became the headquarters of a Jesuits' school founded in 1580, later raised to the rank of academy (or university) in 1617-1618 by Leopold of Austria.
The Jesuits also built the beautiful church of Saint George's between 1609-1618, marrying the gothic and Renaissance styles.
King Louis XV transferred this university to Strasbourg in 1701. Molsheim was for 5 centuries an episcopal city.

Sightseeing

City with dense historical past, Molsheim is rich with numerous monuments and vestiges which justify a visit.
The wayfarer will be able to see a Gallo-Roman registered funerary stele there, as well as a Merovingian tomb.
The remainders of the old fortifications, walls and the Blacksmiths' tower with its 2 guard houses date from the 14th century.
Great Butcheries or " Metzig " of 1525, Renaissance style with frontages, gables, double external staircase, gargoyls, 3 faced " jaquemart " clock and moon dial.
" Altorferhof " administrative site, former garret of the counts of the 17th century, with niche of the 17th century with pieta.
The Hotel de Ville square with the Town Hall of the 19th century, the fountain of the 16th century, the houses of 16th and the 17th century.
Many other old houses, at numbers 1 and 5, on Church street, at numbers 9 and 16, on Jenner street at number 14, on Saverne street, at numbers 9 and 15, on Strasbourg street.
Vestiges of the Carthusian monks' convent of the 16th to the 18th centuries with the house of the prior, the hostelry, a cross of the 15th century, a Mount of Olives about 1780, the arches of the old cloister, itself embedded in houses.
The castle of the " Oberkirch " of 1770.
The parochial church, former Jesuits' church of the 17th century, of both Gothic and Renaissance styles with its turret with skylight and its 2 outside galleries, its gabled Renaissance and Gothic windows, its nave with low sides, ribbed vaults, its hexagonal sacristy with stucco decoration dating from the 17th century, its sculpted gates of 17th, its pulpit of 1631, the Virgins of the 16th and 18th century, its recumbent statue of the bishop Jean de Dirpheim, from the 14th century, the statues of the 17th and 18th centuries, its baptismal font of the 17th century.
The Lutheran church, church of the union of the evangelic societies.
The famous Dompeter church known as being the oldest church of Alsace, with its nave of the 11th century, its octagonal tower of the 18th with square stock dating from the 12th century, its polygonal choir of the 19th century, (the statues from the 16th century, alas stolen ).
In the neighbourhoods, the cemetery, a thousand-year-old lime and the source of " Sainte Pétronille ".
