History
In the 8th century monks occupied the locality temporarily, then ended up establishing themselves in Murbach.
The commune belonged to them until the Revolution.
The contraction of " Berg " or mountain, and " Holz " or "wood " gave its name to the borough.
Sightseeings
Old sarcophagi dating from the 11th century are in the medieval cemetery located near the old castle.
The vestiges of the old castle are buried under a monticule planted of vines.
One can still see there traces of the Vauban channel, dug in 1699 (to transport the stones extracted from the quarries of Bergholtz and used for the construction of the fortress of Neuf-Brisach). This channel was filled in in 1790.
The presbytery as well as a well are from the 18th century.
Houses of 16th to the 18th centuries.
The church Saint Gall was built from1759 to 1764.
One can discover also there 3 crosses going back to 1746, 1846 and 1899.
You also find there a martyry dated 1849.
