Grands Crus : [ Altenberg de Bergheim ] [ Kanzlerberg ]

History

Bergheim was occupied as of the Neolithic era on the site called " Grasberg ".
Traces of Roman housing still remain on the site of the city, and more to the east.
Being quoted towards 705 as " Bercheim " phonetic contraction of " Berg ", mountain, and of " Heim ", home.
The village changed ownership thirty-two times during the Middle Age, its principal owner being the " Ribeaupierre " in addition lords of Ribeauvillé, and the House of Austria.
The strengthened city as early as 1311 benefits then on from the rights of asylum.
In 1848, anti Semite Riots were generated by the presence of a significant Jewish community living in the city.
The village was miraculously spared by both World Wars.

Sightseeing

Vestiges of the Bronze Age exist. An important Roman villa, a mosaic of which is currently visible at the Unterlinden's museum in Colmar, was recently found on the site called " Fröhney ".
The village is surrounded with a double strengthened surrounding wall with its " Upper Gateway " and 9 towers dating from the 14th century.
Ramparts and ditches are well preserved.
In the ancient districts you will find numerous wine growers' houses of both Gothic and Renaissance styles.
The Town Hall dates 1776. On Market square is a fountain. The façades of the houses of this square are remarkable. Former Tithe yard or " dîmière ". A house on Church's square is identical to the ossuary.
Outside the city is the former headquarter of the " Tempelhof's Templars " dating 1558.
The church Our Lady with its apse and choir of the 14th century, its nave of 1718, its Gothic bell tower - hall with the " Magi's Worship " dating from the 14th century, in the tympanum, the wooden statues of Holy Anne and Saint Joachim dating from the 15th century and the murals of the 14th century.
Next to the church, an ossuary of Renaissance style of 1550, today the current school.
Reichenberg's castle was rebuilt in neo-medieval style towards 1900.

Free stroll in the public garden of the Château de Reichenberg from July 1st untill August 12th, 10:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m..
Guided vist of the Vineyard Footpath, with wine tasting every Thursday at 15:00.
Grape harvest' feast : at the end of September.
Fishing.
Pedestrian paths of " Herrengarten " with a lime tree planted in 14th century.
