Kitterlé

An exceptional site :
At the entrance to the Lauch valley, to the north of Guebwiller, the Kitterle forms the lower steep spur of the important Unterlinger foothill, and so its aspect varies from southeast to south and to southwest. Extremely well sheltered from northerly winds, it enjoys exceptional sunshine, and occupies a unique site in Alsace. Cultivated on terraces, its altitude ranges from 270 to 420 metres. Its subsoil consists of Middle Buntsandstem : coarse Vosges sandstone and the overlying quartzite conglomerate. Towards the summit, the site just comprises a few layers of the clay- and mica-rich Upper Buntsandstein. At its western extremity, the Vosges main fault makes contact with the basement: Carboniferous volcanic grauwacke-sandstones, still a siliceous soil.
Favoured varietals :
Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Tokay Pinot Gris are particularly suited to this vineyard of 25,79 ha in area. The light sandy soil held back by immense dry stone walls permits only a limited yield, which favourises a great concentration of flavours and gives the wines exceptional ageing potential.
Within living memory...
The Kitterlé was mentioned in 1699. In 1782, twelve "schatz" of its vines were revealed as being the property of the Jesuits of Ensisheim. The wines of this vineyard have been sold under their own name since 1830.
Typical characteristics :
Kitterlé Riesling : An attractive bouquet with slight mineral hints encourages tasting. On the palate its finesse and exquisite fruitiness is balanced by agreeable acidity.
Kitterlé Gewurztraminer : A floral bouquet. On the palate, its delicate aromas develop to reveal the perfect balance between suppleness and acidity. Kitterlé Tokay Pinot Gris : A fine bouquet. On the palate, richness and great opulence, a subtle aroma, with an overall velvety smoothness.
