An exceptional site :
Nestling at the very heart of the valley of Kaysersberg and sheltered from the winds, is the Furstentum hillside. Facing south-south-east, it forms an island of calciphile Mediterranean vegetation.
The brown, calcareous soil has a pebbly structure, skeletal and filtering, with outcrops of bedrock.
It is a marl calcareous sandstone from the lower Dogger period, covered at the end with tertiary conglomerates.
The steep (37 %) slope optimises exposure to the sun, on a soil which accumulates both heat and moisture. Conditions are ideal for producing exceptional wines.
Favoured varietals :
The 30,50 ha of the Furstentum are planted with Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Tokay Pinot Gris.
Within living memory...
The Furstentum is mentioned in 1330 in the inventory of vineyards belonging to the Convent of Basle.
Typical characteristics :
Furstentum wines age well, displaying great finesse and remarkably powerful aromas.
