Altenberg de Bergbieten

An exceptional site :
Not far from Strasbourg, between Traenheim and Bergbieten, this vineyard covers about 29,07 ha, at an altitude ranging from 215 to 265 m. Situated in the Vosges foothill region of Molsheim and sheltered by the Graben of Balbronn the Altenberg has a southeast exposure, ensuring significantly long hours of sunshine and a remarkable microclimate. Its homogeneous clayey marl soil of Keuper with gypsum and dolomite sandstone banks favours heat and water retention.
Favoured varietals :
Its excellent exposure and the quality of its soil gives pride of place to both Riesling and Gewurztraminer, while according well with Tokay Pinot Gris and Muscat d'Alsace.
Within living memory...
A very renowned vineyard slope, the Altenberg is mentioned in documents dating from the Middle Ages. It is first referred to in 1050 in the documents concerning Pope Leo IX. Numerous religious communities and the Diocese of Strasbourg owned vineyards there.
Typical characteristics :
On the nose, a very floral bouquet, delicate and subtle. On the palate, lingering flavours, admirably enhanced by a freshness which reveals the peculiarity of the terrain. The wine achieves perfect balance after several years of bottle-ageing, developing the specific bouquet which is characteristic of clayey marl soils.
