Wine and healthEffects of wine drinking on health
What is the ”french paradox” ? The term 'French paradox' refers to the observation that while both the French and Americans have a diet high in saturated fats, smoke cigarettes and exercise little—which are all risk factors for cardiovascular disease—the French have a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease than that of the Americans; 36% compared with 75%. The difference in risk has been attributed to the consumption of alcohol and, , in particular, red wine. The French consume 60 L per capita of wine per year, while the Americans only consume 7.7 L per year. date: 2006-02-10
What might cause headache when drinking a certain kind of wine Wine contains alcohol. Alcohol acts on various parts of the human body, including the head. Headaches are referred pain to the surface of the head from the deep structures, such as the brain and its related tissues, veins and arteries. Pain is referred via pain receptors on the deep structures to either the front or the back of the head.
The headache experienced after consuming alcohol is generally related to your blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Alcohol and its primary breakdown product, date: 2006-02-10
What is better for my health? red or white wine? All wines, red and white, irrespective of variety, vintage or year, and geographical indication or region, have the potential to confer 'health benefits', when consumed in moderation, that is, approximately two to three standard drinks per day. From accumulating research results it has been proposed that approximately 75% of the cardioprotective effects of wine are due to its ethanol component, and only 25% of the effects are due to its phenolic component. The ethanol and phenolic components have complementary actions on the cardiovascular system. It has been suggested by overseas researchers that one variety of wine or wines from one region, may contain more phenolic compounds than other varieties and other regions.

Genetically modified wines : is the price worth paying? The possible introduction of genetically modified (GM) grapevines into California vineyards is currently causing heated debate. At one extreme, scientists are so familiar with the use of genetic modification as a research technique, they can't see what all the fuss is about. At the other extreme, tree-hugging environmentalists see GM crops as a threat to be resisted at all costs. date: 2006-03-11
Wine, coronary heart disease and mortality Despite an ever increasing amount of evidence that a moderate consumption of alcohol has a beneficial effect on many aspects of health, the vast majority of work concerns the effect on coronary heart disease, and that easily defined indicator of general ill health, death. date: 2006-03-15
Wine's antioxidant assets Of late, there has been a spate of reports emanating from the medical community citing wine's effects upon health based on the presence of those components other than alcohol. date: 2006-03-15
Is red wine synonym of "good cholesterol"? Researchers in France have found differences in red wine drinkers’ “good cholesterol,” which could account for the drink’s beneficial effects against cardiovascular disease.
Researchers analyzed the high-density lipoprotein composition of teetotalers, regular drinkers and heavy drinkers (most of whom generally drank red wine). date: 2006-03-15
The best way to avoid a hangover A hangover once is a hangover never wanted again. But it doesn’t mean that you have to avoid alcohol to have a fun night out and feel good the next day. So how do you avoid it all?

Obesity Risk and Wine People who have an alcoholic drink or two a day may have a lower risk of becoming obese than either teetotalers or heavy drinkers, a new study suggests. Researchers found that among more than 8,200 U.S. adults, those who said they enjoyed a drink every day were 54 percent less likely than nondrinkers to be obese. Similarly, those who drank a little more (two drinks per day) or a little less (a few drinks per week) had a lower risk of obesity than teetotalers.
