What kind of wine is the best as a starting point if one wants to start drinking alcohol?

If you never had alcool before, wine could be the right answer as a starting point...and continuing one as well Smile
People not used to wine drinking might look for something rather sweet such as Tokay Pinot Gris or Gewurztraminer. They all matched perfectly well as an aperitif.
Sylvaner is ideal with local alsatian food (onion tart, trout...) while Riesling is the wine to be drink with nearly every possible meal (great for a quick lunch at home or a gastronomical poshy table).
All those wines are very fruity so it won't be difficult to find the one that suits your taste.
