The French designation Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée , (AOC), is a certification granted to certain French wines, cheeses, butters, and other agricultural products by a government bureau known as the Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (INAO). Under French law, it is illegal to manufacture and sell a product under one of the AOC-controlled names if it does not comply with the criteria of the AOC.

‘Great wine is made in the vineyard’; a phrase often quoted by journalists the world over. Meaning great wine comes from great grapes planted in great soil, which in turn comes from a great location. Wine is the fermented juice of freshly gathered wine grapes and has been with us since Ancient Egyptian times.

Alsace rises above the sea of chardonnay
I admit it: I'm sick of chardonnay. Whether it's ultra-expensive white Burgundy, a massive over-oaked fruit bomb from Australia or California that deadens the palate after a few sips, or one of the flailing attempts from Italy, Spain, and elsewhere to emulate one of those styles, there's a pervasive abuse of this potentially great grape that I just can't stomach anymore.

The review of Tom Stevenson for wines of Alsace 2002 vintage.
Tom Stevenson is arguably the world's most respected authority on Alsace and Champagne. A multi award-winning author, he writes a column exclusively for us, but much more too.
Each year, my tastings will concentrate - but not exclusively - on the latest vintage to go into bottle, which in this case is 2002. This allows me to review the year in the vineyard, and then to qualify this with initial views of wines in bottle.

Regulations. Europeans love them and the classic wine producing countries – France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria and Portugal – all regulate their industries tightly, with rules galore. Now we have proposals by the French to introduce yet another tier of regulations on top of the existing AOCs, with the goal of creating exceptional AOCs, AOCEs, a grand set of new rules for the very best wine regions, in the expectation that this will raise the standing of French wine and solve the many problems it currently faces. Of course, this is a wrong-headed fantasy, and in this piece I’ll explain why, offering my own humble thoughts about a better way of solving the malaise in the French wine industry.
