TALL, elegant and handsome, Anthony Barton can easily pass for one of England's landed gentry, always the perfect gentleman, always very hospitable and very warmly welcoming.
His wines are a joy to taste, and he is a mine of information, the kind of information that can only come from an insider.

Most wine lovers can't name a single Sauternes other than the famous Chateau d'Yquem. Some may be familiar with First Growth labels like Chateau Suduiraut, La Tour Blanche and Rieussec, but Yquem's status -- and price -- has long eclipsed all others among these sweet Bordeaux dessert wines.

Oh dear, once again the spectre of price hikes hangs over the 2005 vintage even before we hack have had a slip.
All the 2005 wines I have tasted thus far from most regions of France are absolutely fabulous. But if the prices rise by the 30% rumoured this will cut back sale in the future.
The Bordelaise are short sighted, as I have told many to their faces over the years, big price rises frighten off the new imbibers of fine wines.

The first of the Bordeaux first growths has released its 2005 price – 250% more expensive than 2004 – and merchants expect the rest to announce prices today, Wednesday.
Chateau Haut Brion announced a bottle price of €240 last week (€2880 or around £2000 per case) releasing a portion of its total stocks by giving its customers just under half of their last year's allocation. Last year Haut Brion released at €96.

IT is blistering hot in Bordeaux with temperatures hitting 32 degrees C and beyond by the late afternoon. In fact, the only thing hotter is the Bordeaux 2005 en primeur market, and it's no joke.

Alsace wines seem to be suffering from an identity crisis, and it has to be said that they can easily confuse the average punter.
Problem one -those tall and rather elegant green flutes - more than a bit reminiscent of a German Mosel.

"Wines packed full of character and a vintage to keep," announced The Alsace Wine Council of the region's stellar 2005 harvest. Of particular note, the Crimant d'Alsace wines will be fresh and very fruity, the Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Muscat varietals are all very well-balanced and fruit-driven, while the Gewurztraminers will be very aromatic.

To most Americans, Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio is a trendy white wine that suddenly appeared from Italy, California and Oregon just in time to rescue them from a lifetime of Chardonnay. Over the last few years, sales of Pinot Gris have taken off, especially in the wine-by-the glass arena. Nowadays we are seeing more and more Pinot Gris coming to our shores from Italy as well as from Australia and New Zealand.

Last month, when seeing the gorgeous vineyards of Alsace for the first time in six years, my first thought was, "Why the hell haven't I been here for six years?" Although I managed to travel to Alsace four times between 1992 and 2000, tasting explorations in other locales have kept me away more recently, resulting in several sorts of deprivation

The Vosges are usually Alsace’s blessing, bleeding off the rain and rendering
its sheltered vineyards drier and sunnier than almost anywhere else in
France.
