Bordeaux Hype Again |

 Oh dear, once again the spectre of price hikes hangs over the 2005 vintage even before we hack have had a slip.
All the 2005 wines I have tasted thus far from most regions of France are absolutely fabulous. But if the prices rise by the 30% rumoured this will cut back sale in the future.
The Bordelaise are short sighted, as I have told many to their faces over the years, big price rises frighten off the new imbibers of fine wines.
Please let the rise be very little after all you cannot use the excuse of the high price of crude oil to try and justify a rise. (Well I hope nobody uses oil in making their wine!)
Taxes are the same or very similar to last year, perhaps the French government might levy a tax of say 100% of any price rise. Then in due time many more people would be able to purchase the top end of the wine market as with steady prices and inflation the comparative price would fall. One can only dream.
The other side of the coin is export sales of Bordeaux wines fell in 2005. This is where confusion creeps in.
Bordeaux is a huge wine growing area with both the top growths and the bottom Crus called Bordeaux. Many of the bottom wines are crude.
Bordeaux is doing a lot to clean up its act but the bottom end is sad and lonely.
New rules and new appellations are coming into force however why the Bordelaise donÕt take the bull by the horns and stop any wine made that is below Cru Artisan using the word "Bordeaux" on the label.
Ah, but then the world would be a better place and simpletons like me would not be confused when we see Chateau de Antony on the label. OK one can call the sommelier and ask him where is Chateau de Antony? He may answer just past Margaux on the right. Codswallop, it is just a made up name by a negoce to flog off poor wine.
