 Bordeaux proprietor Anthony Barton has said that high prices for the 2006 vintage are reasonable, comparing the campaign to that of the 1989 vintage.
Writing in the September issue of Decanter magazine, the head of Leoville- and Langoa-Barton said that prices were reasonable - 'when compared with the current prices of the 2005s'.

Aside from the top chateaux, the region's producers struggle to be relevant

Perusing the selection at a Cannes wine shop, I noticed a group of Japanese businessmen.
Among the shop's selection of upscale wines -- such as Cristal and grand cru Burgundies -- one gentleman selected two bottles of 1995 Cheval Blanc, one of Bordeaux's greatest wines (for just over $600 a bottle).

Sales of woodchips to winemakers in Bordeaux have increased by as much as 200%.
The main driver for this increase is a legal vacuum. A text banning the use of woodchips in AOC winemaking was prepared last November (2006) by INAO, the French regulatory body for AOC wines, but it has not yet been signed into law.

Californian wines have once again beaten their French counterparts in a blind tasting – judged this time by a group set up expressly to challenge the 'Americanisation' of taste.
The Grand Jury European is a collective of international wine experts with comprehensive - and lofty - ideals. Its founder Francois Mauss had an epiphany when he saw Parker scores in a Paris wine shop and vowed to start a European tasting panel that 'would have power over what Europeans buy'.

The fame of Chateau Pichon-Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande, can be attributed without any doubt to one person, Madame May-Eliane de Lencquesaing.
The history of Pichon Lalande or Pichon, as it is affectionately called, goes back a long way, more than four centuries to be precise, but as I pointed out in an earlier essay, the significant milestone in the history of this great Chateau was the day in 1978 when May-Eliane took personal charge of it.

TALL, elegant and handsome, Anthony Barton can easily pass for one of England's landed gentry, always the perfect gentleman, always very hospitable and very warmly welcoming.
His wines are a joy to taste, and he is a mine of information, the kind of information that can only come from an insider.

Oh dear, once again the spectre of price hikes hangs over the 2005 vintage even before we hack have had a slip.
All the 2005 wines I have tasted thus far from most regions of France are absolutely fabulous. But if the prices rise by the 30% rumoured this will cut back sale in the future.
The Bordelaise are short sighted, as I have told many to their faces over the years, big price rises frighten off the new imbibers of fine wines.
