The little-known Sylvaner grape can join the Pinot Gris and Riesling varietals as a grand cru, the French appellation authority INAO has ruled.
Though the designation only applies to one grand cru plot, the 14ha Zotzenberg vineyard, it is considered a major victory for winemakers in northern Alsace who have been fighting for some 15 years for the recognition of Sylvaner.

The Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins d’Alsace (CIVA) describes 2006 as a year of sharp contrasts, but the region’s inter-professional wine body has given an upbeat summary of the vintage.
A relatively cool and rainy spring resulted in late budburst and slower than usual growth in the vineyards which, CIVA says, was followed by excellent weather conditions in June, in terms of sunshine and temperature, allowing the vines to make up for lost time and flower quickly at the usual date.

A Vintage That Brings Alsace Back To Reality
A rather mild winter with a lack of rain. Dry until spring, some growers start to worry about this drought. The flowering took place around mid June and was very successful on all grape-varieties. July was not too warm, August was rather normal much cooler than the previous year. September was nice, warm and dry which enabled all grapes to fully mature and to remain extremely healthy

Kaefferkopf is officially the 51 st Alsace Grand Cru. Located in Ammerschwihr in the heart of Alsace and its numerous high quality vineyards, this new Grand Cru stands on 71 hectares, one of the biggest in Alsace.
This decision didn't please everyone for the following reasons:
Some producers are not very happy about losing the right to use the appelation Kaefferkopf.
Others are not pleased that their concurrents gain new rights to use "Grand Cru " classification.
A bunch of them would have agreed to keep the Kaefferkopf name without meeting the Alsace Grand Cru production rules, especially the yield ones.

For the first time ever, screw-capped Grand Cru wine from Alsace will be sold commercially in major markets, including the UK, said Alsatian winemaker Frederic Blanck of the well-known Domaine Paul Blanck in Kientzheim.
Blanck, who has been selling lower tier wines under screw cap since 2001, will sell the 2005 vintage of his Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru without cork closures in the UK, the US, Australia and other markets, ‘though probably not yet in France, because the French are not as open minded about this as they should be,’ he said.

New proposals by the French government for changes to France's wine categorisation system are once again meeting stiff opposition from producers.
"The trouble is the wine producers want more flexibility, like the right to use wood chips, but they don't want to lose the AOC name, or have another name", said Georges Pierre Malpel, advisor to France's Agriculture Minister, Dominique Bussereau.

"Wines packed full of character and a vintage to keep," announced The Alsace Wine Council of the region's stellar 2005 harvest. Of particular note, the Crimant d'Alsace wines will be fresh and very fruity, the Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Muscat varietals are all very well-balanced and fruit-driven, while the Gewurztraminers will be very aromatic.

The Vosges are usually Alsace’s blessing, bleeding off the rain and rendering
its sheltered vineyards drier and sunnier than almost anywhere else in
France.

During the second week of January, 2003, I attended a series of tastings of the wines of Alsace. In addition to extensive tastings of the wines of Hugel, Marcel Deiss, Trimbach and Zind-Humbrecht, we also sampled several offerings from Dopff au Moulin, Pierre Sparr, Schlumberger, Leon Beyer and Theobald Schoffit.

The French designation Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée , (AOC), is a certification granted to certain French wines, cheeses, butters, and other agricultural products by a government bureau known as the Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (INAO). Under French law, it is illegal to manufacture and sell a product under one of the AOC-controlled names if it does not comply with the criteria of the AOC.
